Degrees: PhD (Hawaii), MSW (Hawaii), BSW (Victoria)
Interests: Violence against women, women and criminal justice, social work practice, research methods, program design and evaluation.
Prior to joining the Faculty of Social Work in 1997, Dr. Avery Calhoun practiced social work in Victoria and Honolulu, primarily in the area of violence against women. Her practice interests include clinical social work, particularly narrative practices, and program development and evaluation. Her recent research has focused on restorative justice, with funding from the Alberta Law Foundation.
Recently, she has been teaching research courses and some undergraduate and graduate clinical courses. She was honoured with Teaching Excellence Awards from the University of Calgary’s Student Union in 1999, 2003, and 2007, with an Honourable Mention in 2004. Calhoun began serving as the Associate Dean and Division Head of the Faculty's Edmonton division in May 2008.
