Profile

Patricia Samson joined the Faculty of Social Work in 2016. She has over 28 years of social work practice experience, both direct and indirect, in the areas of domestic violence, justice support and correctional services, mental health, and community-based healthcare. She teaches undergraduate and graduate level courses related to social policy, social justice, social welfare, the organizational context of practice, and field education.

Patricia’s research interests are focused on advancing social work education and practice in the areas of teaching and learning, mental health and addictions, and health care. Patricia is involved as a principle investigator on a project examining Communities of Practice for social practitioners. Secondly, she is involved in research to develop pedagogical approaches to support critical thinking and social justice. Finally, Patricia is involved in a research project that will focus on developing a model of integrated service delivery to support people with complex social, mental health, and health care needs within a rural context.

Research and Scholarly Activity

Patricia is currently involved in the following research activities:

  • Studying Communities of Practice within the context of addictions and mental health care
  • Developing a teaching module to support teaching social justice to social work students
  • Developing an integrated model of service delivery in a rural context
  • Examining field education in the Canadian context
  • Building social work knowledge in the area of teaching and learning in social work education

Current Research

Current research projects include examining the concept of Communities of Practice from the perspective of social work practitioners working in the field of addictions and mental health; developing a pedagogical approach to teach and promote social justice to social work students; community-based research to develop a model of integrated service delivery in a rural community.
