Les Jerome received his undergraduate degree (Dean’s Honor List) with a special interest in linking First Nations and Métis teachings with selected western social work practice, an interest and specialty that he later carried into his Master’s degree. He is of Métis/Saulteaux/Cree heritage.
Working primarily with sexually abused children and families in First Nations and Métis social service agencies in Manitoba, Jerome pursued his interest and practice in children’s therapies and family therapy for 12 years before accepting a tenure-track position in the Faculty of Social Work.
Beginning as a teaching assistant in 1992 at the University of Manitoba, Jerome has lectured and guest-lectured at Red River Community College and the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Mount Royal College in Calgary, Oldsun Community College (Siksika Nation), and the ACCESS program (Social Work) in Calgary, AB. He began sessional work at the Faculty of Social Work, Calgary, in 1997, and since his appointment in July 2000, Jerome has continued to work in the ACCESS program in Slave Lake, Red Deer, and Lloydminster while working fulltime on the Calgary campus. He has also worked as a liaison with Carleton University, the University of Austria, and the University of Poland. He has been involved in numerous presentations and workshops in the community.
Jerome has received two awards for teaching; the Reverend Dr. Chief John Snow Sr. award in June of 2000, an Honorable Mention Award for Teaching Excellence in May 2007, and a nomination for Teaching Excellence Award in 2003.
