Application Process Calgary Location
Application forms - Calgary and VLC only - Southern and Northern Alberta students must submit a paper copy as per the guidelines and instructions for each site (See FSW Regions quick links to the left).
Please ensure reference letters are sent to Calgary for applications to these BSW programs only
You will need to complete two applications to be considered for the BSW program or the Virtual Learning Circle program in Calgary.
- Step 1. Online U of C Application
- Step 2. Once you complete the U of C Application form online, you will need to complete the Faculty of Social Work Online Application for students applying only to the Calgary or VLC programs
The Faculty of Social Work application form will require a 1250 word, two part essay consisting of two parts that follows a proper academic format, including the use of references (APA). Click the following link to apply to the Calgary or VLC Programs: https://rio.med.ucalgary.ca/SW/index.php only once you have already completed the University of Calgary application (you will need the 8 digit numerical UCID number generated by that process). Part 1: A description of your reasons for applying to the BSW program
Part 2: A discussion and analysis of a current social problem
For an effective and unified essay, we suggest that you bridge your reasons for applying (part 1) to the social problem of your choice (part 2). Your essay will be evaluated for clarity, content, and writing ability.
- Step 3. Download the Social Work Letter of Reference Form.
Post Diploma Transfer Applicants (Diploma obtained within the last five years):
- Download the reference form and obtain a reference from your social work diploma field instructor of record.
All other Applicants:
- Download the reference form and obtain three references.
Please have your referees fill out the attached form and send the reference letter electronically to bswinfo@ucalgary.ca.

When reviewing your application, the Faculty of Social Work takes into consideration your volunteer experience, specifically any human service experience (paid or unpaid). There is a field on the online FSW application to include a resume or list of relevant experience.
Transcripts
If you are not a current University of Calgary student, you need to submit your official high school transcript and all post secondary transcripts. All transcripts should be mailed directly to the main admissions office.
To obtain your highschool transcript, you can contact:

- In British Columbia – Ministry of Education Transcripts
- In Saskatchewan – Student Services Saskatchewan Learning
- In other provinces, contact the last high school you attended to request submission of your official high school transcript directly to the University of Calgary Admissions Office.
